Industry News & Updates

Motorcoaches will loop past U.S. Capitol with Rolling Awareness Campaign to showcase ways bus industry moves America

Hundreds of motorcoaches representing 3,000 motorcoach companies across the United States and their 100,000 employees will be rolling into the nation’s capital on May 13 to support awareness of the industry’s role as a critical component of the country’s infrastructure. Motorcoaches do everything from evacuating victims of hurricanes and wildfires to
transporting thousands America’s military troops all around the nation. Under the banner, Motorcoach Rolling for Awareness, these vehicles will circle Washington, D.C. as a moving rally, bearing messages that explain the importance of the industry and ask Congress and the White House to extend economic relief to motorcoach companies. The event is jointly organized by the American Bus Association and the United Motorcoach Association.

This is a positive event showcasing how the nation’s motorcoaches move America.

“Our ask is simple,” Jeff Polzien of Red Carpet Charters said. “The U.S motorcoach industry is requesting Congress put motorcoaches back on the road by making available $10 billion in grants for operational and payroll assistance and $5 billion in long-term zero percent interest rate loans to the industry, ensuring these monies are available immediately and easily accessible. Our businesses need a lifeline so we can be there when the country needs us next.” Polzien is chairman of the United Motorcoach
Association.

“The current economic remedies available to small businesses don’t address sectors like ours that will take much longer to recover from the current crisis. Airlines, Amtrak and transits have received more than $75 billion prop up these industries,” said Peter Pantuso, President & CEO of the American Bus Association. “Of the 3,000 bus and motorcoach companies in the United States, 90 percent are small, family-owned business who have had to close their businesses during the COVID-19 crisis. By having to shut their doors while no one is traveling, nearly 100,000 employees, which include drivers, cleaners, maintenance and repair, administrative and safety personnel, are now without incomes.”

These vehicles will share messages to underscore the many ways motorcoaches help move America:

• Military transports across the nation for troops in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces
• Evacuations of Americans from wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods
• Connecting people to jobs with commuters and employee shuttles
• Connecting rural America to urban centers and to other modes of transportation
• Providing school transportation as well as sports and educational trips
• Reducing congestion by taking 36 cars off the road for each coach.

Providing vital services to the entire transportation network when other modes are inoperable The event will stage at DC’s Audi Field, south of the U.S. Capitol, and motorcoaches will begin rolling at 10:30 a.m.

ABC Companies Focuses on Preparing Operators for Post-COVID 19 Operations.

Introducing CLEANS Sanitization, Disinfection and Contact Limitation Products — Now Available.

Winter Garden, FL, April, 2020 – As thousands of operators were forced off the roads in mid-March, ABC Companies turned its focus to shaping solutions that navigate the “how” of operating in this new reality. Putting effective safeguards and protocols in place designed to ensure the comfort and security of drivers and passengers will be paramount in the post-COVID environment. With the introduction of its new CLEANS (Contact Limitation & Eradication of Airborne Noxious Systems) program, ABC offers fleet owners a variety of products and services designed to thoroughly disinfect coaches and optimize cabin air quality while providing driver and passenger shielding and personal hygiene stations onboard fleet vehicles.

“As the economy restarts, demonstrating how operators can protect drivers and passengers will be a top priority in restoring traveler confidence”, says Thom Peebles, ABC Vice President of Marketing. “The new CLEANS suite of products and services gives fleet owners the tools to think ahead and begin planning to move as quickly as possible when health professionals give us the green light to get rolling”.

ABC CLEANS offers a variety of options that can work with the widest possible range of coach brands and models currently in service, as well as new Van Hool equipment. “The immediacy of addressing customer needs and issues cannot be understated”, says Roman Cornell, President and Chief Commercial Officer, ABC Companies. “Our focus is on creating viable solutions that can be easily adapted, installed and removed, but most importantly ready to go now. Ultimately, we want to get passengers onto our customer’s coaches as quickly as possible, and creating an environment they feel comfortable traveling in is key,” asserts Cornell.

The branded CLEANS program will continue to grow as new products are added to the portfolio based on emerging technologies and customer needs.  With decals, seals and videos designed to remind drivers and passengers of their carriers’ commitment to their well-being, motorcoach operators can focus on getting passengers back on board.  “We are eager to help get our industry rolling again and believe that our CLEANS initiatives can provide a much-needed level of confidence for passengers, drivers and owners that can get us all moving in the right direction again,” said Dane Cornell, Chief Executive Office, ABC Companies.

ABC CLEANS products are arriving at ABC Companies locations now, many of which can be found in the Parts Source online parts store. For more information, details and pricing, contact an ABC Account Manager.

Covid-19 & CARES Act Update

As a family owned and privately held business, ABC Companies recognizes the many hardships being put on our industry during this unprecedented time. While we continue work to safeguard our employees, customers and suppliers, we understand the challenge of simply staying abreast of the many changes impacting our business environment. With the funding that has become available through the CARES Act, we want to ensure that our industry and your business receives the share of support it deserves.

Just like you, we are analyzing the specifics of the CARES Act provisions. As detailed documentation becomes available, we encourage you to discuss and investigate the provisions of this Act with your legal, tax and accounting advisors before making any decisions. After our initial analysis, we have identified some areas of the Act we believe may be beneficial to many of our customers as options are considered:  The Small Business Administration (SBA) will play an important role in helping small businesses (businesses with less than 500 employees) get through this pandemic. This includes quicker loan processing, increased lending limits and potential LOAN FORGIVENESS.

  • The Small Business Administration (SBA) will play an important role in helping small businesses (businesses with less than 500 employees) get through this pandemic. This includes quicker loan processing, increased lending limits and potential LOAN FORGIVENESS.
  • The two key areas of relief are essentially the “CARES Act 7a Loan Program” and the more traditional “Economic Injury Disaster Loan.”
  • CARES Act Loans will be administered by approved lenders and can be used for expenses including payroll, mortgage, utilities and more.
    • Loans can be up to 2.5x monthly payroll not to exceed $10 Million.
    • Eligible for forgiveness, with qualifying amounts based on number of full‐time equivalent employees.
    • Employees returning to work prior to June 30th, 2020 can be included in loan forgiveness calculations
  • Loans may be used for:
    • “Payroll costs” (as defined in the Act);
    • Costs related to the continuation of group health care benefits during periods of paid sick, medical or family leave, and insurance proceeds;
    • Employee salaries, commissions, or similar compensation;
    • Interest payments on any mortgage obligation (excluding prepayments of or principal payments on a mortgage obligation)
    • Rent (including rent under a lease agreement);
    • Utilities; and
    • Interest on any other debt obligations incurred before the covered period (which would begin on February 15, 2020)
    • Eligible for forgiveness, with qualifying amounts based on number of full‐time equivalent employees.
    • Employees returning to work prior to June 30th, 2020 can be included in loan forgiveness calculations
  • If you do not elect to take advantage of an SBA 7a loan, then the Act offers a partial credit on qualifying wages paid.
    • Eligibility is based on businesses with first quarter gross receipts at or below 50% of previous year, and continues if gross receipts are down 80% or more versus the same period last year.
    • This benefit is potentially available through 12/31/2020
  • There is a potential deferral on your requirement to pay social security taxes on wages.
  • Of note, due to aggressive tax depreciation in prior years, some of your businesses may have a tax Net Operating Loss carryforward. In some situations, these losses can now be carried back to earlier years and generate a refund for previously paid income taxes.

The Economic Injury Disaster Loan is also available with a cap of $2.0 million. However, you cannot receive new funds under both programs.

The Act has many more provisions designed to help all our businesses and our current and former employees get through these unprecedented times. While our shared findings are not meant to replace or expand on any final government legislation, the goal is to share our learning with the industry and our customers.

As ABC works to assist you in these challenging times, we will continue to comply with local mandates, keeping you apprised of any changes at our locations. We will work to maintain the highest possible levels of support throughout the pandemic. Our 24/7 CustomerCare Technical call center, Parts Source call center and online parts store, along with our Service, Leasing and Sales teams continue to be ready to assist you.

ABC Companies and the Cornell Family take great pride in being part of the motorcoach industry for almost 70 years, giving us the privilege to work with many of the organizations and individuals that make our industry a success. We are committed to navigating these unprecedented times by working together, so that we can emerge as a stronger industry ready to serve the travel needs of your customers. We recognize the important role our locations and staff play in servicing your businesses throughout North America, and we want to share some of the steps we are taking as we navigate the fluid coronavirus situation together.

Keeping Our Facilities Open

We are following the protocols established for COVID-19, and are respecting all local government mandates while working to prevent any disruption in service to our customers.  While some employees will be working remotely, those roles which require on-site presence to support customer needs, will continue to work at our locations.  We will be taking recommended precautions in regards to social distancing and ongoing disinfecting and sanitizing. We want our employees, customers and visitors to feel as comfortable as possible at our facilities.

Maintaining Critical Services

Our Parts Source operations will continue with order fulfillment and parts shipments.  All call center operations and our online parts store will continue uninterrupted.  To date there has been limited disruption in our supplies and shipping times, however, we will keep our many valued customers informed.

The CustomerCare 24/7 technical call center will remain fully staffed and operational.  Our staff continues to be at the ready for any technical support necessary to keep our customers operations running at peak efficiency.

Our current mobile service teams will remain largely unaffected at this time.  We will continue to monitor local government mandates for any changes, keeping customers utilizing these services apprised of any changes.

Supporting our Employees

Because our traveling employees have a greater chance of potentially contracting and traveling with health risks, we are limiting non-essential travel. While many employees will be working remotely, every effort will be made to prevent any disruption in service to our valued customers. This travel reduction will be lifted as soon as possible.

Working Together

We are here to support you and are working hard to ensure our ABC team members can continue to provide you with uninterrupted, dependable service as ABC Companies exercises the utmost caution in the wake of the COVID-19 situation.  The precautions put in place are designed to allow the greatest levels of service possible while staying compliant with state and local mandates.  As the ABC Team is committed to your needs, please do not hesitate to contact your ABC Representative with any questions.

Representing Our Industry

This is a time when we must work as an industry to weather the storm so we can return to servicing the traveling public as quickly as possible.  There are a number of resources we would encourage you to utilize which you will find attached below.  In addition, we will continue to provide updates via our social media outlets and at abc-companies.com.  We strongly encourage you to contact your local government representative and make them aware of the exceptional hardships our industry and businesses are enduring as a result of customer concerns and government mandated actions.  The following link is a very efficient way to make your voice heard:  https://p2a.co/eTZTLRM
